Cheap DIY Hydroponic Seedling Starter

Postby kotik » Tue Sep 10, 2013 11:25 am

When you grow hydroponic plants under grow lights space is very precious so optimising it becomes important. The issue I had last year was I had one plant per large bucket so having 8 plants under my 400W grow light was a pain and left little space for other soil plants.

I had seen previously hydroponic cloner devices which were expensive as pre made units and even still quite expensive using all the right parts for a DIY build. I took this idea and used cheap parts to make something similar which would allow me to grow many small seedlings still in a hydroponic medium ready to transfer later to larger net-pots.

This is what I came up with:
1 small plastic container from bunnings $7.95
I bought 30 small lettuce grow pots from trademe for $10
Rock-wool I already had but this is also cheap from SOG

While the rock-wool soaked in water for 5 minutes I simply drilled holes slightly smaller then the diameter of the top of the lettuce pots into the lid of the plastic container, take your time here and go easy with the pressure here so you do not break or crack the lid. I then removed the bottoms of the lettuce pots as I did not want the roots from the plants to get stuck in it. I then took my soil based seedlings and washed them off in a bucket of water to carefully remove as much of the soil as I could before cutting a small slit into the rock-wool and inserting the seedling into it with the roots exposed at the bottom. I then slid the rock-wool into the lettuce cups which was snug enough to hold it in place. I drilled two small holes for 4mm air lines and inserted the air-stones, filled the container with nutrient water and put the lid in place.

It has only been a couple of days so far so hope they do OK, I expect to loose a couple from the shock of moving but no biggie, to be honest I don't even need most of these, it is more of an experiment :)

Such an awesome idea! I'm borrowing this ;)
I was going to leave most of my plants in soil under lights to save space. But I think the earlier you move them the less shock will affect them.
Cheers! :D

So far so good. I had one seedling die but quickly replaced that. Growth is OK but a little slow as it is far from my light so will raise it up this weekend and hopefully get some faster growth. Will probably also try some cloning at the end of the season using this too.

I have a couple of questions:

1) what is SOG, is it a shop?
2) can you explain the liquid part of the unit.

What are you using there. Is it airated?, how often do you replace the liquid? Anything else I need to know?

I have never tried this but would love to give it a try.

Hi, yes SOG is a shop (switched on gardner). http://sog.co.nz/

The liquid part is water with added nutrient (refer here: http://goo.gl/nPMZjU). Just do a lower dose then recommended on the bottle, maybe half. I use an air pump with a airstone to add oxygen to the water. The plant root has to sit directly in the water, so this is kind of a DWC (deep water culture) setup but modified to be a seedling starter. The water just needs to be topped up really and by time it needs a change you will likely be ready to move the plants into their own dedicated location (ideally still hydroponic).

Give it a go you will be surprised how easy it is and how fast plants grow in hydroponic setups.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Scott

I did some more reading in the site and found SOG, and they have a location in. CHCH

I think I missed it a bit this year starting a bit late.

I bought a simple heated unit which was good at sprouting the seeds, I am in Mexico at the moment so hoping the plants are still growing with a watering every 2 days with a 15 minute watering automated waterer.

I grew some Habs and some Serrano this year which I like.

I also had a rocotto that grew over the winter last year at the front door. I tried one before leaving on March 20 it had turned red but not too hot. Biggest chilli I have grown with about 60 pods.

Glad to have found the forum I am in Christchurch normally.

I just bought 0.5 kg of dried chillies / 5 vararities in the market today, about 100g each. Hope customs aren't going to be a problem.

ancho, mulato, Catarina, guajillo, chipotle

Cost about $4.40 nzd for 1/2 kg

Hope to be on here a lot more for the 2016 season...
