Growing a wide range of chilli seeds

Postby Chillfire » Sat Aug 26, 2017 7:31 pm

I'm hoping you can all help, I'm growing seeds in a DIY hot house, with an array of chillies ranging from tame Tabasco right though to the Carolina Reaper.. seeds had been soaked, they are in those jiffy growing disks. Jiffy's are in a seed raising tray, with a clear plastic lid. They get loads of sun as I shift the tray 2-3 times a day so the tray is warm. Problem is.. 2 weeks on, no sign of life yet.. is this normal?

2 weeks and no sign of life is not ideal. the hotter the chillies are the longer they usually take to germinate but 14 days is getting on a bit.
moving them around to keep them in the sun will help but ideally its the heat there after not the sunlight, if you don't have a heat mat I would be looking at putting them on top the hot water cylinder or something else that can keep them around 25-29 degrees at all times. they don't need the light until they have leaves to use it.
All so make sure the jiffies are not soaked just damp, or the seeds will rot.

I'm so happy, it's been a 50% strike rate so far, with more chilli seedlings just sitting blow the surface of the soil. I placed my make shift hothouse on top of a hot water bottle every morning before work and before I went to bed at night.. seemed to have worked well. Carolina reapers have been most successful to my surprise.

:D chillies are now at a maturity that I have transferred
Them into a moveable trough to maximise sunlight through the day, the trough I one that I can control water retention and drainage. Out of the 10 chillies seeds I planted of each variety I had a stile rate of 6/10. Now I have growing
A huge range of chillies. Carolina reaper, tobasco, habanero, jalapeno, ghost chilli, birds eye and Hungarian wax. BRING ON SUMMER! if it ever happens.
